Indian T20I skipper, Suryakumar Yadav, came in defence of the seasoned Rohit Sharma after a spokesperson of the Indian National Congress, Shama Mohamed, remarked in relation to the latter's fitness levels. In a recent post on X which was deleted a while after it received major backlash, Shama commented on Rohit's weight, calling him "fat for a sportsperson". She had also added that he needed to "lose weight".

Rohit's India and Mumbai teammate, Suryakumar, commended Rohit's contributions as a skipper as well as his longevity as a player.

“If you see him as a captain, in the last four years he has taken the team to the finals of four ICC trophies, so it is a big thing. If a person is playing cricket for 15-20 years, it is a big thing. I know how important fitness is for him. I have seen him closely, he works very hard – according to me, he is at the top & I wish him all the best for the finals,” stated Suryakumar, as quoted by Hindustan Times.

Notably, Suryakumar did not make the cut for the 15-member roster for India's Champions Trophy 2025 campaign. However, he is currently in the United Arab Emirates to cheer the side. India will be taking on New Zealand at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday, March 9 in the final.

Rohit seeks redemption in grand finale

Speaking of Rohit and his recent achievements, he guided India to their second T20 World Cup triumph last year. Rohit announced his retirement from the T20I format immediately after the conclusion of the nail-biting final against South Africa, but not before emerging as the second-leading run-getter in the tournament with 257 runs in eight innings.

After missing out on claiming the Cricket World Cup trophy in 2023, Rohit & Co. would aim to lay their hands on the Champions Trophy title, and end a flawless campaign on a sweet note. If India win the final, they will become the first side to win the marquee ODI tournament thrice. They were joint-winners in 2002, and won it outrightly in 2013.
