'I think comparisons are too early' - Virender Sehwag's straightforward stand after Yashasvi Jaiswal's comparison with legends
Yashasvi Jaiswal, the promising Indian batsman, recently found himself in the spotlight after being compared to the likes of Bradman and Tendulkar.
In the game of cricket, comparisons are unavoidable, especially when a young talent exhibits remarkable performances on the field. Yashasvi Jaiswal, the promising Indian batsman, recently found himself in the spotlight after a stellar performance during the Test series against England. However, the praise and comparisons, including those to legends like Sachin Tendulkar and Don Bradman, were swiftly addressed by none other than Virender Sehwag.
Jaiswal's knock of 209 runs in the second Test against England showcased his exceptional skill and potential. Yet, amidst the praises, the comparisons began to surface. With only six Tests under Jaiswal's belt, fans couldn't help but draw parallels to the greatest names in cricketing history.
Virender Sehwag gives a no-nonsense reply
Sehwag, known for his straightforward demeanor, dismissed the comparisons without hesitation. In a virtual interaction from Dubai, Sehwag expressed his belief that while Jaiswal is undoubtedly a talented batsman, such comparisons are premature. "He is a very good batsman but I think comparisons are too early," Sehwag said as quoted by HT.
Sehwag's stance was supported by his former opening partner, Gautam Gambhir, who emphasized the importance of allowing young players to develop without pressure. Gambhir acknowledged Jaiswal's remarkable achievement but cautioned against over-hyping young talents.
“I want to congratulate the youngster for his achievement, but, more importantly, I want to tell everyone that let the young man play. We have seen in the past that in India we have a habit, especially the media, to over-hype their achievements, and give them tags and make them look like heroes,” Gambhir had said.
“The pressure of expectation gets the better of them, and the players are not able to play their natural game. Let him grow, and, enjoy his cricket,” added Gambhir.
In the ongoing third Test match at Rajkot, Yashasvi failed to contribute much to the scorecard in the first innings and scored just 10 runs after being dismissed by Mark Wood.
