‘I think the guys are moving in the right direction’ – Brian Lara optimistic about West Indies’ chances ahead of marquee India series

West Indies’ performance mentor Brian Lara has expressed that his side has been working towards the right direction ahead of the crucial series against team India. Notably, the two sides will contest in a multi-format series, which includes two Tests followed by three ODIs and five T20Is from July 12 onwards. 

The Windies and team India will lock horns in the first red-ball match on Wednesday, July 12, at Windsor Park in Dominica. The Test series will mark the beginning of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 cycle for both teams. Ahead of the first Test, Lara acknowledged team India’s ability but also mentioned that the Windies have a fair chance under the leadership of Kraigg Brathwaite.

“We have two very important Test matches which start the two-year cycle (WTC) for us, it is against India. At home and away from home, they are one of the top teams in the world. I think the guys are moving in the right direction, in terms of where we started the camp and where we are. It is just a few days off from the first match at Dominica, but it’s a young group, ably lead by Kraigg Brathwaite,” Lara was quoted as saying by the Indian Express.

It is worth noting that the Windies selection committee named two uncapped left-handed batters in the set-up as Kirk McKenzie and Alick Athanaze are likely to make the cut in the playing XI during the forthcoming series. Delighted with their inclusion, Lara stated that the two youngsters have the right mindset and the willingness to learn which will help them big in international cricket.

“I feel that some of the guys can come into their own in this series, it is a tough opposition but I feel that’s the way we can get the best out of them. Great capable players, young and of course, you would have loved if they had a lot more experience in the first-class arena but looking at their style of play and attitude, I belief they do have what it takes to perform at the highest level,” he added.

“It may take some time but obviously as an international cricketer if you are entering this stage, no matter what age you enter, you got to learn very, very quickly. And, I think they have that sort of attitude to want to learn and (are) willing to listen,” Lara concluded.
