I would be amazed if I play 50-over cricket beyond the World Cup: Chris Woakes

England all-rounder Chris Woakes is likely to follow the footsteps of Test skipper Ben Stokes and announce ODI retirement post the upcoming World Cup. The cricketer aims to prolong his red-ball career and is also ready to give up on overseas tours as his record in a few countries is not up to the mark.

Notably, the 34-year-old played an important part in England's three-wicket win over arch-rivals Australia in the third Test of the ongoing Ashes at Edgbaston. However, he stated that he feel fatigued after the game and therefore wants to cut down the number of matches he plays. 

“I would be amazed if I played 50-over cricket beyond the World Cup. It'll be hard in India but we have a great team and squad that could hopefully do something special. At the end of that, you map out what the future might look like as an all-format player, and the next cycle: I certainly won't be playing ODI cricket at 38-39 years of age,” at a #Funds4Runs session.

Meanwhile, England's next Test assignment after the Ashes is a five-match tour to India early next year. Woakes is not sure if he would be picked for the series as the sub-continent pitches will barely help a seam-bowling all-rounder like him. He talked in brief about his away record and believes that a lot can happen ahead of that.

“I've not been picked yet, and I'd never say never; never say no," Woakes said about the prospect of travelling to India. "I don't know if I'd be selected on a tour like that: my away record speaks for itself. I've genuinely not thought about it, and there is a lot to come before that,” Woakes said.
