The Border-Gavaskar Trophy is one of the most anticipated Test series in all of cricket. Team India and Australia are all set to lock horns in the first Test on February 9 in Nagpur. One of the topics that has been in discussion recently is the batting position of 30-year-old KL Rahul.

Back when Australia visited India in 2017, KL Rahul was one of the highest run-getters of the series with 393 runs. He saved his form with a knock of 149 at the Oval back in 2018, but faced the axe from the Test squad regardless. As Australia visits India once again, the batter's position in the squad has become uncertain due to Shubman Gill’s sensational form as of late.

In the pre-match press conference on Tuesday, KL Rahul opened up about his batting position in the squad by saying, "If the team wants me to bat in the middle, I am ready to do it."

KL Rahul opines on the what the pitches will have to offer in the first Test

With the fabulous form that 23-year-old Shubman Gill is in, the wicketkeeper-batter's position as opener seems to be in doubt. However, Rahul appears to have no problem batting lower in the order if Gill is selected to open for India against Australia.

Many veteran players have backed the 23-year-old to open alongside skipper Rohit Sharma throughout the Test series. Gill’s emergence as the opener across all formats could make it possible for Rahul to come down the order.

Rahul also talked about the team wanting to play three spinners due to the pitches favouring spin, as he said, "There will be a temptation to play three spinners because of the turning track in India, but we will know the pitch on the day of the game. Not decided on playing XI, tough decision, couple of vacancies are there."
