If they made me the BPL CEO, it would take me one or two months to correct everything: Shakib Al Hasan
Bangladesh Premier League 2023 season is set to start on January 6 with Chattogram Challengers facing Sylhet Strikers in the opener.
Just two days before the start of the Bangladesh Premier League 2023 season, Shakib Al Hasan provided a sharp criticism at the league's poor management and marketing. He even described the league as inferior to the nation's domestic One-Day Cup, Dhaka Premier League.
The star all-rounder highlighted various issues at BPL 2023, including the timely players' draft and availability of the overseas players. The upcoming season is clashing with the schedule of SA20 2023 and ILT20, and that has led to many overseas stars skipping BPL 2023 or play one or two matches. BPL conducted a players' draft on November 23, 2022, after the SA20 and ILT20 drafts secured the big-name players.
When asked about what he would do if he was made CEO of the league, Shakib provided the example of the famous Bollywood movie Nayak, where the person in charge has to do everything one day. Shakib said that he would do the players' draft on time and hold the BPL on a different date to avoid clashes with other T20 leagues.
"If they made me the BPL CEO, it would take me one or two months to correct everything. You have seen the movie Nayak right? If you want to do something, you can do it in one day. I would do the players' draft and auction (on time) and hold the BPL during a free time. We will have all the modern technologies. There will be quality broadcast and home and away venues," Shakib said as quoted by ESPNCricinfo.
BPL is a huge failure in terms of marketing: Shakib Al Hasan
Shakib also gave his take on BPL's struggles while competing with Caribbean Premier League (CPL) and Pakistan Super League (PSL). He said that there is no market for BPL because they never created or added value to one which is a huge failure in terms of marketing.
"There's no market because we never created the market. If we could have added value to this market, it would have been really big. Cricket is played everywhere in this country, even in remote villages. It is a very popular sport in a country of 160-180 million, so I don't believe there can't be a market for cricket here. It is a huge failure in terms of marketing," Shakib added.
