In a display of true sportsmanship, Desert Vipers captain Colin Munro showcased the spirit of the game by withdrawing a run-out appeal against his New Zealand teammate Martin Guptill during an International League T20 (ILT20) clash on Sunday.

Facing off against Sharjah Warriors, Desert Vipers succumbed to a seven-run defeat in match No. 13 at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. Sharjah Warriors, opting to bat first, set a formidable target of 175. In response, Desert Vipers managed 167/7, falling short in the chase.

The noteworthy incident occurred in the 12th over of Sharjah Warriors' innings. Joe Denly, facing a delivery from wrist spinner Shadab Khan, sent the ball racing down the ground. Unfortunately, non-striker Guptill found himself in the line of fire, the ball hitting his glove and deflecting towards the bowler, who promptly dislodged the bails.

In a commendable move, Munro decided to retract the appeal, allowing Guptill to continue his innings. The Kiwi batter went on to contribute a crucial 39 off 32 balls, featuring four fours and a six, before being dismissed by Shaheen Afridi.

Despite the efforts, Desert Vipers faced a setback in their chase, with Chris Woakes dismissing Munro early. Opener Alex Hales tried to anchor the innings with a brisk 61 off 40 balls, including three fours and five sixes. Azam Khan added 35 off 22, but Desert Vipers fell short of the target.

Desert Vipers' crucial clash against MI Emirates holds the key to reshaping ILT20 fortunes

Desert Vipers are currently grappling at the bottom of the ILT20 points table, facing a challenging campaign with three losses in four matches. Their upcoming battle against MI Emirates on January 30 looms large as a critical juncture for the team.

With aspirations to reverse their fortunes, Desert Vipers will be determined to rally, hoping to bounce back and carve a more favourable position in the ongoing tournament.
