IND vs BAN 2024: David Hemp urges Bangladesh batters to cash in on starts

"It goes without saying that you need to start well and once you have faced 20-30 balls, you get a bit of idea of what's happening. You want to go on from that..." Hemp said.

Such has been the case with Bangladesh batters that a good start is being cut short by some impactful Indian bowling. On Day 3 of the Chennai Test, their openers Zakir Hasan and Shadman Islam put up 62 runs for the first wicket while chasing a humongous target of 515. But the lineup crumbled to 158/4 at the end of the day.

While Zakir scored 33, Shadman departed playing a brief knock of 35. Mominul Haque and veteran Mushfiqur Rahim scored 13 each. After the stumps, Bangladesh batting coach David Hemp urged the batters to convert good starts into big scores for the better. He also recalled the similar plight of Bangladesh batters against Sri Lanka in March where their batting came under intense scrutiny.

"It is something that we talk about. It goes without saying that you need to start well and once you have faced 20-30 balls, you get a bit of idea of what's happening. You want to go on from that, especially when you have got 30-40 runs. You are generally in (at that stage)," said Hemp as quoted by Cricbuzz.

"You have done the hard work, so make sure you cash in. We did it in patches in Pakistan. We will keep talking about it, and keep working on it in practice. We have to get ourselves in first, as that's something we haven't done well enough. If you go back to March (against Sri Lanka), we were not doing well enough. So we are doing that better. But once you get to 40-60 balls, ideally you bat 120 balls. When you do that, you will walk away with a reasonable reward," he added.

Bangladesh's batting woes continues

Talks were going on during the Sri Lanka series when Bangladesh were handed over a hefty 328 runs defeat by Sri Lanka in the Sylhet Test. The second innings of the Test became Bangladesh's fourth consecutive innings where they failed to score less than 200 runs. With Bangladesh trailing by 357 runs in the Chennai Test with just six wickets in hand and two days to spare, the prospects of a draw too look bleak.
