In a recent turn of events during the second Test match between India and England, former cricketing stalwart Sunil Gavaskar had to abruptly leave his commentary duties in Visakhapatnam. The reason behind this unexpected departure was the demise of his mother-in-law, Pushpa Mehrotra.
Gavaskar, who has been a prominent figure in Indian cricket, immediately flew to Kanpur on Friday afternoon to be with his wife, Marshneil Gavaskar, and the grieving family. This unfortunate incident occurred on the first day of the Test match, altering Gavaskar's plans and casting a shadow over the cricketing atmosphere.
The 74-year-old, who played 125 Tests and scored over 10,000 runs, has seamlessly transitioned into various roles in cricket administration post his retirement. His contributions include a stint as the interim BCCI president, showcasing his enduring commitment to the sport.
This is not the first time Gavaskar has faced personal loss during a cricket assignment. In 2022, his mother, Meena Gavaskar, passed away due to age-related issues. The revered figure was 95 years old and played a significant role in nurturing the cricketing maestro.
Gavaskar, a respected commentator and analyst, had just resumed his commentary duties for the second Test in Visakhapatnam after participating in the first Test in Hyderabad. His sudden departure reflects the unpredictable nature of life, with the cricketing fraternity expressing condolences and understanding for the cricketing legend.
As the cricketing world wishes Gavaskar and his family strength during this challenging time, the ongoing Test match in Visakhapatnam continues. India, after winning the toss, are battling it out against England, aiming to bounce back after a defeat in the opening Test.
As of now, India have scored 336 for six at Stumps on Day 1, with Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ravichandran Ashwin at the crease, batting at 179 and five not out, respectively. Jaiswal has impressively hit 17 fours and five sixes in his outstanding knock so far. He would be eager to convert this into a double ton once the game resumes on Day 2.
