IND vs ENG: Virat Kohli, Joe Root and Ben Stokes all dismissed for duck in World Cup for the first time
The match between India and England set an unwelcome record, with Virat Kohli, Joe Root, and Ben Stokes all dismissed for ducks for the first time in the same game.
Team India and England locked horns in the 29th match of the ongoing ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Sunday, October 29. Jos Buttler, England captain, won the toss and was invited to bat first. India, who had the chance to bat first for the first time in the competition, had a terrible performance with the bat, posting just 229 runs in the allotted overs.
Interestingly, the contest set an unwelcome record, with Virat Kohli, Joe Root, and Ben Stokes all dismissed for ducks for the first time in an ODI World Cup game and that too in the same game.
Kohli entered the batting order at number three after India lost the wicket of Shubman Gill in the fourth over. In the seventh over of the match, Kohli moved out of the crease to loft the ball in an attempt to clear the mid-off fielder at the top of the ring against David Willey but was caught by Stokes and departed for a nine-ball duck. Notably, this was the first time in an ODI World Cup match that the former India captain was dismissed for a duck.
With a below-par target of 230 to chase, England got off to the worst start. It was ace Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah who removed Root in the fifth over of the second innings. Bumrah bowled it fuller on off and angling in while the batter walked straight over his stumps and attempted to flick the ball away behind square. He played down the incorrect line, was caught in front, and departed for a golden duck.
Meanwhile, Stokes was dismissed by India’s star pacer Mohammed Shami. It is worth noting that Shami has done to the England all-rounder what the opponents did to Kohli. Shami angled it in on a nice length from around off and the talismanic all-rounder attempted to swipe across the boundary. However, the ball pitched and returned with an angle that skidded past the bat and broke the stumps, sending him out for a ten-ball duck.
