Star India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin wasn’t seen in the most jovial of moods at stumps on Day 1 of the second India vs England Test in Visakhapatnam on Friday, February 02. Notably, the off-spinner came in to bat just before stumps as India lost their sixth wicket in the 91st over in the form of wicketkeeper KS Bharat.
Ashwin walked in at number eight and faced four deliveries of the penultimate over of the day by Shoaib Bashir scoring one run. He further had to take the strike in the last over as well, as he played out the entire over bowled by Rehan Ahmed and even scored a boundary on the second last ball of the day before defending the last ball.
The all-rounder remained unbeaten on 5* (10) as players from both teams began shaking hands at the close of play. However, Ashwin seemed to be a bit annoyed as he was seen having an animated chat with the on-field umpire Marais Erasmus. The reason behind Ashwin’s annoyance is not known but it could be related to the elongated last session.

Notably, the expected 90 overs of the day had been bowled before the cutoff time but the umpire continued to extend the day’s play till the scheduled time of 4:30 pm. India unfortunately ended up losing a wicket in the 91st over and as a result, Ashwin had to walk out to bat for the last two overs of the day which most batters don’t like. Hence, the spin all-rounder may have been a bit annoyed by that.
Yashasvi Jaiswal shone with 179 on Day 1
Debutant, Rajat Patidar was also asked about the details of Ashwin’s chat with the umpire in an interaction with the broadcaster after stumps. However, the 30-year-old also didn’t know anything about it.
“I don’t know what the conversation was about,” said Patidar at the close of play.
