India's Next Head Coach: Why not Mahela Jayawardene?
Recently BCCI opened applications for the high-profile role of Indian men's cricket team head coach, and several prominent names have emerged as potential candidates.
Recently the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) opened applications for the high-profile role of Indian men's cricket team head coach, and several prominent names have emerged as potential candidates.
However, one name that deserves serious consideration is former Sri Lankan captain and Mumbai Indians (MI) director of cricket operations, Mahela Jayawardene.
Current head coach, Rahul Dravid's tenure will end after the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Under Dravid's guidance, Men in Blue had an impressive run, reaching the finals of the World Test Championship 2023 and ODI World Cup 2023.
With Dravid potentially not seeking an extension, the BCCI is exploring options, including looking at foreign coaching talent after nearly a decade, following the successful tenures of John Wright, Gary Kirsten, and Duncan Fletcher.

Mahela Jayawardene has prior experience working with Sri Lanka and Mumbai Indians
Jayawardene ticks many boxes as a viable candidate. Under his guidance, MI won multiple IPL titles, having a successful partnership with Rohit Sharma. Apart from the IPL, he has served as a consultant for the Sri Lankan team.
What works in Jayawardene's favour is his man-management skills and ability to encourage a healthy dressing room environment, a requirement for the demanding Indian team head coach role. BCCI was keen on securing his services even when Dravid took over from Ravi Shastri.

Other notable candidates like Gautam Gambhir and Stephen Fleming have had success with IPL franchises but may be warned by the extensive travel and long-term commitment required for the India job.
While the BCCI will certainly evaluate all candidates thoroughly, Jayawardene's impressive coaching resume, man-management skills, and previous interest from the board make him a strong option. If he decides to throw his hat in the ring, it will be difficult for the Indian cricket board to overlook his credible trials.
