IPL 2023: DC owner Parth Jindal calls out match officials after contentious no-ball call during team's clash against PBKS

The Match 64 of IPL 2023 between Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings witnessed a controversial moment as a contentious no-ball call towards the end of the game had the fans divided. During the final over of PBKS’ innings, Ishant Sharma bowled a waist-high full toss on the fourth ball of the over which was smacked for six by Liam Livingstone. The on-field umpire immediately signalled it to be a no ball following which DC captain David Warner reviewed the decision.

The ball tracking showed that the ball would’ve just gone over the stumps missing it by a whisker. Livingstone had also crouched slightly while playing the shot but the third-umpire stayed with the on-field called and the delivery remained a no ball. After the end of the match, commentator Harsha Bhogle pointed out the lack of consistency from the third umpire while judging the waist-high no balls. 

The Tweet also got a reply from Delhi Capitals owner Parth Jindal who expressed his confusion around the rule and said that the ball that dismissed Shafali Verma in the WPL final should also have been called a no ball similarly.

Bhogle took to Twitter and wrote, “On the waist-high no-ball judgement by the 3rd umpire, it is critical that there is consistency going ahead.” The Tweet got a response from Jindal, who wrote, “I for one seriously cannot understand the rule - the ball in the WPL final that got Shafali Verma out was clearly a no ball if the same rules apply that applied tonight. What is the rule? @IPL.”

On the waist high no-ball judgement by the 3rd umpire, it is critical that there is consistency going ahead.

Notably, Shafali Verma was dismissed in the second over of the first innings during the Women’s Premier League 2023 final in March. The DC opener holed out to backward point off a waist-high full toss by Issy Wong. After being given out on the field, Verma reviewed the decision and the replays showed the ball to be on her waist when the ball first made contact, and she wasn’t even crouching while playing the shot.

However, the decision was not overturned and Verma was dismissed for 11(4). As a result, DC could only score 131/9 in the first innings and lost the final by seven wickets.

No ball controversy from SRH vs LSG 

Earlier, during Match 58 of the ongoing IPL season between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Lucknow Super Giants there was another no ball controversy during the first innings of the match. During the 19^th over of SRH’s innings, the on-field umpire signalled no ball during the third ball against Abdul Samad. 

However, LSG captain Krunal Pandya reviewed the decision and it was ruled in their favour by the third umpire who felt that Samad had crouched while playing the shot. Despite use of the technology, the decision making hasn’t been at its best in the ongoing IPL, which can prove to be detrimental for the teams going ahead in the playoffs.
