IPL 2023: MS Dhoni doubtful for opening clash against Gujarat Titans
MS Dhoni has developed a niggle in his left knee and is likely to not feature in the opening clash on March 31.
Ahead of the opening clash of the Indian Premier League, Chennai Super Kings have been hit by two untoward developments. After the confirmation of Mukesh Choudhary's exclusion from the tournament, legendary skipper MS Dhoni too is doubtful for the tournament opener scheduled to be played against Gujarat Titans on March 31. The 41-year-old has developed a niggle in his left knee which puts a question mark on his inclusion in the squad for the much-awaited clash.
Dhoni also didn't take part in the team's practice session on Thursday, adding fuel to the speculations of his injury being serious enough to be considered ahead of Friday's match. Moreover, CSK don't have a lot of wicketkeeping options either and it would thus be interesting to see who takes charge behind the wickets in Dhoni's absence.
With some experience behind the stumps to back their selection, Devon Conway and Ambati Rayudu emerge as the first-choice replacements for Dhoni in his celebrated wicketkeeping slot. Notably, Rayudu also kept wickets during his stint with Mumbai Indians and can do it again for his current franchise.
In Dhoni's absence, Ben Stokes, who has been a successful leader for England, could have been seen as his successor had he not been dealing with a niggle himself. In such a situation, Ravindra Jadeja, who had earlier led Chennai in the bulk of the season in 2022, might once again be given the reins of the team.
Akash Singh replaces Mukesh Choudhary in CSK squad for IPL 2023
After CSK's premier bowler from last season, Mukesh Choudhary has been ruled out of the 2023 edition due to a back injury, India's 2020 U-19 World Cup squad player Akash Singh has been roped in as his replacement.
Akash Singh had an impressive performance in the 2020 U-19 World Cup where he picked up seven wickets in six matches at an economy rate of 3.81. After breaking into the big stage, the 20-year-old would be keen to leave an indelible mark in the tournament.
Chennai will play their second match against Lucknow Super Giants at the MA Chidambaram Stadium where fans will get to see the team playing their first home match in four years.
