Gujarat Titans' young Indian dasher Shubman Gill is breaking records one game at a time in this year's edition of the Indian Premier League. Gill, who smashed the highest individual score in a playoffs match after registering his third IPL century against Mumbai Indians, has smashed more sixes in IPL 2023 than his last three seasons combined.
Shubman Gill reclaimed the Orange Cap after blitzing past Faf du Plessis' tally in this year's edition during the must-win encounter against Mumbai Indians. The 23-year-old batter smashed ten sixes during his carnage in Ahmedabad, taking his tally to 33 sixes this season, which is more than the sixes he hit in his last three seasons combined, 32.
The Gujarat Titans opener put the Mumbai bowlers to the sword, especially the slower bowlers, in a masterclass in T20 batting. The Punjab-borne cricketer was watchful in the initial part of the innings but went into overdrive after the conclusion of the powerplay. His innings took his overall tally to 80 sixes in the tournament's history since making his debut in 2018.
Shubman Gill has his eyes set on Jos Buttler's scoring record in IPL
Gill smashed the highest score by a Gujarat Titans batter in IPL history, compiling 129 runs in just 60 deliveries. Incidentally, it was also the highest individual score by a batter in playoffs, breaking former Indian opener Virender Sehwag's previous record. During his stay at the crease, Gill dealt in maximums, smoking ten sixes, the most by a GT batter in an IPL innings.
His third century in the ongoing tournament meant that he joins former Indian skipper Virat Kohli and England's white-ball icon Jos Buttler as the only players with more than 850 runs in a single edition of the IPL. He has now got his sights on Buttler's record for the second-highest run tally in an IPL season as Gill is just 12 runs away from matching the English skipper's tally.
