Ahmdabad-based Torrent Group has acquired 67 per cent stake in Gujarat Titans' ownership ahead of IPL 2025. The deal was finalized following a mandatory approval was made by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). As a result, CVC Capitals, the original owners of the GT franchise, will however, continue to hold one-third capital in the team since it has kept 33 per cent stake with itself following the transaction.

The deal went through at an astonishing valuation of INR 7522 crore, where the new majority owner holds INR 5035 crore, while the rest remains with CVC. Furthermore, BCCI is entitled to earn INR 375 crore from the deal, since the board gets five per cent of every transaction within the ownership group, according to Cricbuzz.

The acquisition was completed following the receipt of all necessary approvals, including the board approval, as per the acquirer's public release.

"With the fulfilment of these conditions, the acquisition has now been successfully completed. As part of the transaction, Irelia, managed by funds advised by CVC, will continue to hold a substantial minority stake of 33 per cent, maintaining its association with the franchise,” the release read.

GT captain Shubman Gill hopes to make amends

Among the newest franchise in the cash-rich league, GT won their inaugural 2022 season under the captaincy of Hardik Pandya, and made it to their second-consecutive final in 2023. However, ahead of the 17th edition of the mega tournament, Pandya moved back to Mumbai Indians, which forced Gujarat to appoint star batter Shubman Gill as their skipper.

Fairly inexperienced as a leader, Gill failed miserably in his debut edition as captain. After making it to two finals in a row, the Ahmedabad-based side failed to qualify for the playoffs for the first time in three years. Gill was criticized heavily for his poor captaincy skills, and rightly so, as the team won only five games out of 14 in the 2024 edition of the marquee event.

GT host PBKS in Motera on March 25

The captain will now look to start afresh in the IPL 2025, where Gujarat play their season opener to Punjab Kings at the majestic Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad on Tuesday, March 25. They will then be facing Mumbai on March 29 at the same venue, before moving further in the tournament. The GT skipper will want the team to do well, especially after some fresh additions during the mega auction were made to bolster the squad.
