Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have kicked off the 2024 season with the same aggressive approach that propelled them to success last year as they defeated Gujarat Titans in a rather one-sided encounter by 63 runs.
After the game, batting coach Michael Hussey provided insights into the team's mindset, emphasizing their commitment to pushing the game forward.
"It's definitely been a directive from Fleming to keep pushing the game forward," remarked Hussey, as quoted by Cricbuzz, following CSK's commanding victory over Gujarat Titans, where they posted a formidable total of 206/6.
The shift in CSK's batting strategy stems from the introduction of the impact player rule, which provides teams with additional resources. With the likes of MS Dhoni batting at number eight, CSK boast exceptional depth in their lineup, allowing top-order batters the freedom to adopt a positive approach without fear of criticism.
"We've got MSD at #8, which is crazy. MSD is batting really well at the moment as well. Because we've got so much depth in resources, it means the players up the order, if they're in sort of two minds, take the positive route and they'll certainly have the backing from the coaches and the captain," Hussey added.
"We prefer you to try and push the game forward as much as you can, and if you get out in doing so, it's fine, you'll never be criticised for that. Flem's talk is about playing fast," explained Hussey, shedding light on the team's philosophy.
CSK's batting prowess was evident last season, with Devon Conway and Ruturaj Gaikwad setting the tone in the Power Play overs. The team's middle-order hitters, including Shivam Dube and Ajinkya Rahane, capitalized on the strong start, playing high-risk cricket with confidence.
Rachin has been awesome to watch: Hussey
Rachin Ravindra, CSK's recent acquisition, has seamlessly integrated into the team's aggressive ethos. Hussey praised Ravindra's positive attitude and adaptability, evident in his impactful performances against Royal Challengers Bangalore and Gujarat Titans.
"He's had a great start. He's been awesome to watch. He's just come here, full of energy, just wants to learn so much and make a positive impact on the team environment," Hussey remarked, highlighting Ravindra's enthusiasm and potential.
"He is just enjoying it. He's trying to soak up as much knowledge as he possibly can and he really feeds off the crowds here as well. I think once he got a couple of good shots early, his confidence just grew and he believed that yeah I can perform on this stage and he's grown from there. I think he's gone out there with a clear mind and a nice positive attitude," Hussey added.
