'It’s been a phenomenal run from Conway' - Simon Doull showers praise on CSK's star overseas opener

The 67th game of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) featured a clash between the David Warner-led Delhi Capitals and the four-time champions Chennai Super Kings at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Saturday, May 20.

Coming into bat first after winning the toss, Chennai Super Kings got off to a wondrous start to the game as Devon Conway and Ruturaj Gaikwad played exceptional knocks. Gaikwad scored 79 runs, and Conway batted brilliantly alongside him, amassing 87 runs in 52 deliveries. 

Their knocks helped Chennai post 223 runs on the board and ultimately win the game by 77 runs. The dominant display for CSK meant that the MS Dhoni-led side became the second team in the IPL 2023 to book a spot in the playoffs of the tournament.

Furthermore, after witnessing Conway’s blistering knock, former New Zealand cricketer Simon Doull heaped praise on the 31-year-old. Doull even opined that Conway is a genuinely good cricketer and has registered amazing numbers in the IPL 2023.

"Conway is averaging almost 50 in the IPL while striking at 140 in just 21 games. Those are incredible numbers. It’s been a phenomenal run for Conway. He does it with classical cricket shots. He’s just a genuinely good cricketer. He plays spin well and plays the quicks very well," Doull told Cricbuzz.

"Chennai have always had players like that. Be it Shane Watson or Michael Hussey, you look at them and say good players, but they’re not T20 superstars, especially Hussey. Faf du Plessis when he was there, you don’t think brute force. But Chennai have always had one, and Conway is another one of those," he added.

By virtue of his brilliant half-century against Delhi Capitals, Conway now finds himself in the third position in the race for the IPL 2023 Orange Cap with 585 runs in 14 games so far. Being one of the most important players for the four-time champions, Chennai will look to depend on his services in Qualifier 1 of the IPL 2023 as well.
