'India are an outstanding team, but anything can happen' - Kane Williamson ahead of 2025 Champions Trophy final
India has never beaten New Zealand in a final of an ICC event and has only beaten them once in knockouts
The stage is set for an epic Champions Trophy final between India and New Zealand at the Dubai International Stadium on March 9. Both the teams have been in stellar form in the tournament and have won their semi-final games convincingly. This will be a challenge for both teams who have some history at ICC events.
While India got the better of the Kiwi side in the group stage in the ongoing tournament, they have usually struggled against the Black Caps, especially in the ICC knockout events. In fact, India have beaten the Kiwis only once in a ICC knockout fixture while they have lost twice.
New Zealand star batter Kane Williamson opened up on the upcoming India challenge, praising Rohit Sharma and Co. as an "outstanding team" while stating that his team will be up for the challenge.
“India are an outstanding team and playing really well, so, look, it's important we try and take away some learnings from that last game. Park this match, and in a final, anything can happen And it was a great atmosphere last game and I'm sure it'll be a good one again,” Williamson was quoted as saying by the Times of India.
“The conditions are different, so it's important that we try and take away some of those positives and be nice and clear in how we're trying to operate come the final, We'll celebrate tonight but we'll be changing our focus quickly to this next match which is an exciting opportunity for us," Williamson added.
Rachin is an incredibly special talent: Kane Williamson
Williamson, who struck his 15th ODI century (102 off 94) in his team's 50-run win in the semi-final against South Africa, praised Kiwi youngster Rachin Ravindra, who scored his second hundred in the tournament and fifth overall in the format. Rachin amassed 108 off 101 with 13 fours and a six. Williamson praised the 25-year-old southpaw for his knock as well.
“Rachin is an incredibly special talent, it's always great to bat with him. He goes out and he puts the team first and he plays with that freedom,” he concluded.
