In the last couple of Test series played, the Indian top-order batters have failed to bring much of an impact considering their roles and responsibilities. Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul were the only two batters who came out as positives for India in the recently-concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. However, touted as the future leader of India's batting pack, Shubman Gill, had a rather disappointing run with his blade.

Gill has been rated highly very early in his career, however, the Punjab-born could manage only 93 runs in the three games of the series that he played, maintaining a poor average of 18.60. As senior batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, too, failed, the expectations from Gill to show a mature intent at the crease increased, however, he could not live up to it.

Meanwhile, former India batter Kris Srikkanth openly bashed the youngster, calling him an overrated batter, and also criticized the selectors to keep backing Gill despite mediocre performances overall.

“I've always maintained that Shubman Gill is an overrated cricketer, but nobody listened to me. He is a highly overrated cricketer, When Gill is getting this much of a long rope, some people might wonder whether even players like Suryakumar Yadav could have been given a longer rope in Tests. Suryakumar didn't have a very good start in Tests, but he has the technique and he has the ability. But the selectors and the management have now boxed him into a white-ball specialist. So that means you have to look at fresh talent," Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel.

Selectors haven't bothered to pick Gaikwad, Sudharsan: Srikkanth

Additionally, the Madras-born also promoted the likes of Ruturaj Gaikwad and Sai Sudharshan for their incredible performances in first-class cricket and suggested the selectors choose to pick young talents like by moving their attention from Gill.

“Ruturaj Gaikwad, for example, has been doing wonderfully in first-class cricket. But they've not bothered to pick him. Meanwhile, someone like Sai Sudharsan has been lighting it up in 'A' tours. You have to promote these kinds of talents. Instead, they are running around circles by picking Gill," Srikkanth said.
