After a remarkable career spanning over 17 years, Marais Erasmus, one of the most respected and accomplished umpires in cricket, is bidding farewell to the Elite Panel of ICC Umpires.
After a remarkable career spanning over 17 years, Marais Erasmus, one of the most respected and accomplished umpires in cricket, is bidding farewell to the Elite Panel of ICC Umpires. The 60-year-old South African will officiate in his final Test match during the second Test between New Zealand and Australia, starting on Friday, March 10, 2024, in Christchurch.
Erasmus has been a constant presence on the international cricket stage, officiating in some of the most high-profile tournaments and matches. His calm demeanour, decision-making, and deep understanding of the game have earned him immense respect from players, coaches, and fans alike.
Notably, Erasmus was appointed to the Elite Panel in 2010, Erasmus has left a mark on the game. His career highlights include winning the prestigious David Shepherd Trophy for the ICC Umpire of the Year on three occasions (2016, 2017, and 2021), a testament to his exceptional umpiring skills.

Marais Erasmus has officiated in four ICC Men's Cricket World Cups, seven ICC Men's T20 World Cups, three ICC Women's T20 World Cups, and two ICC Men's Champions Trophy tournaments. He was one of the on-field umpires for the dramatic 2019 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup final between England and New Zealand, as well as the last two ICC Men's T20 World Cup finals in 2021 and 2022.
“I have had a wonderful time on the Elite Panel, officiating in some top-class matches around the world and in global ICC events,” Erasmus said ahead of his final Test as umpire as per ICC Cricket.
“I am very fortunate to have continued my association with the game after my time as a cricketer in South Africa and have enjoyed every moment. While I will miss being on the Elite Panel and the challenges that come with it, I feel it is time for me to step away and look to contribute to the game in some other way," he added.

Meanwhile, As Marais Erasmus prepares to hang up his umpiring boots, the cricketing world acknowledges the invaluable contribution he has made to the game. In the same vein, ICC's Chief Executive Geoff Allardice was full of praises for Erasmus. Besides, Marais Erasmus' fellow in the elite panel, Umpire Rod Tucker, lauded his immense contribution to the cricketing world and in the umpiring arena.
"Marais has had an outstanding career as an international umpire, He has officiated in many global ICC tournaments, including World Cup finals, as well as high-profile series all over the world, at all times displaying his skill, calmness and composure, even in the most challenging of situations," ICC's Chief Executive Geoff Allardice said for Erasmus' illustrious career.
"He epitomizes what the Elite Panel is supposed to be," Umpire Tucker stated.
