‘Most of these runs have come while batting first’ - Aakash Chopra analyzes Shubman Gill’s performances ahead of IPL 2023 final
Shubman Gill has scored 851 runs in 16 IPL matches so far in 2023.
The final of the ongoing IPL 2023 will feature a clash between the four-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and the Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans (GT), at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, on Monday, May 29.
Originally, the final was scheduled for Sunday, May 28, before rain played spoilsport and pushed the game into the reserve day. Ahead of the rescheduled final, as both teams gear up to battle it out for title glory, the former Indian cricketer, Aakash Chopra, came forward to preview the summit clash of the tournament.
Notably, Chopra pointed out the big difference in star batter Shubman Gill’s numbers when Gujarat bats first as compared to when chasing the target. The former Indian batter opined that despite Gill being in sensational form, most of the runs from the 23-year-old have come while batting first.
"If Shubman Gill bats first, his average is close to 100. He has scored more than one century here and half-centuries as well, but most of these runs have come while batting first," Aakash Chopra said in a video on his YouTube channel.
"When he comes to chase, in fact, he scored runs against this team only in the first match; he has scored runs after that as well, but the average falls to 40. An average of 40 looks less if we see it from his viewpoint; it is well played for the others, but there is a stark difference," he added.
Shubman Gill could be key for Gujarat Titans in the final
Ahead of the summit clash against Chennai Super Kings, the Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans would be keen on taking on the four-time champions and defending their title. Gujarat would be heavily dependent upon the services of Shubman Gill, who has been in scintillating form as of late.
Having scored three centuries in the IPL 2023, Gill currently holds the IPL orange cap and his performance could prove to be crucial for the defending champions in their much-anticipated battle against Chennai Super Kings.
