IPL 2025: Mujeeb Ur Rahman replaces injured Ghazanfar in Mumbai Indians

Afghanistan took a blow ahead of Champions Trophy 2025 as their new spin sensation AM Ghazanfar was ruled out of the event due to a fracture in the L4 vertebra. But this has also made a dent in Mumbai Indians’ (MI) game plan in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL 2025). Ghazanfar was bought by five-time champions for INR 4.8 crore during the mega auction. 

On February 16, IPL issued a statement as it revealed that the 18-year-old will miss IPL 2025 and MI have brought Mujeeb Ur Rahman as his replacement with a price tag of INR 2 crore. It is worth noting that, Ghazanfar was previously in Kolkata Knight Riders camp but did not feature in any game and had come in as a replacement for Mujeeb during IPL 2024. 

“Mumbai Indians picked Mujeeb Ur Rahman as a replacement for Allah Ghazanfar for the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. Allah Ghazanfar is ruled out of the season due to an injury. Mujeeb-ur-Rahman – a right-arm off-spinner – has played 19 IPL matches and has 19 IPL wickets against his name. He joins MI for INR 2 Crore," the statement read.

Ghazanfar made his international debut for Afghanistan last year

Speaking of AM Ghazanfar, he has made all the heads turn with his impeccable performance for Afghanistan. The youngster made his debut for Afghanistan a few months before the IPL 2025 mega auction. Notably, the teenager started his ODI career against Ireland in March 2024. Though he went wicketless in the debut game, he went on to play 11 ODIs and has 21 wickets to his name so far at an impressive average of 13.57.

He was nurtured as the premier spinner of the team and was a deadly combo when operating alongside star spinner, Rashid Khan. He has played only one Test so far and dazzled with four wickets, showcasing his potential in the longer format.
