‘No one can become MS Dhoni’ - Sunil Gavaskar clarifies massive statement on Dhruv Jurel
Jurel made 90 and 39* runs in the fourth Test against England as India won by five wickets.
Playing his debut series, Dhruv Jurel played some brilliant cricket, as he made 90 and 39* in the Ranchi Test against England, which helped India win the match by five wickets and also seal the series. Notably, during his time in the middle, former cricketer Sunil Gavaskar made a bold claim and called Jurel ‘another MS Dhoni in the making’. The 74-year-old compared Jurel’s game awareness with that of Dhoni’s and also believes that the duo share almost the same keeping techniques.
Jurel was elated after receiving such high praise from one of the legends of the game. Meanwhile, Gavaskar clarified his statement and stated no one can become MS Dhoni, but the youngster has the traits to get there. He once again talked about the similarities in Dhoni and Jurel’s game and mentioned how both aim to rotate strike after a boundary, and the former India veteran also believes that they have the same game awareness.

“The way he thinks about the game, the way he assesses the situation and bats accordingly, gives me the MS Dhoni feels. He would hit a six in between and then look for ones and twos to rotate the strike... Even in keeping, the way he gathered that wayward throw and ran out Ben Duckett and then took a brilliant catch of Jimmy (James) Anderson who went for the reverse sweep,” Gavaskar said on Sports Tak.
“When MS Dhoni was of his age, he too had the same situation awareness. And that is why I said, Jurel is like MS Dhoni. No one can become MS Dhoni. There is only one MS Dhoni. But if Jurel can manage to do even some portion of the things Dhoni did, then it would be great for Indian cricket,” he added.
Meanwhile, Jurel has nearly cemented his spot in the playing XI and is higher than KS Bharat in the pecking order. If he plays the fifth Test in Dharamsala, which he is likely to, Jurel will get into BCCI’s contract system as he will be a part of Grade C.
