Obed McCoy replaces Jason Holder in the West Indies’ T20 World Cup squad
"Jason is an experienced player in our set-up. His absence will undoubtedly be felt both on and off the field. We look forward to having a fully fit Jason with us again soon," Desmond Haynes said.
Cricket West Indies (CWI) recently announced a major update in their squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the USA. The side recently announced their 15-man squad for the marquee tournament, and they have updated the same squad as star pacer Jason Holder has been ruled out of the competition due to an injury, and left-arm fast bowler Obed McCoy has been named as his replacement.
Despite Holder’s absence from the tournament, the CWI is confident in their squad’s ability to perform at the peak of their powers. Holder sustained the injury at the County Championship 2024 and will be requiring a recovery period.
With the change, Desmond Haynes, Lead Selector of CWI, came forward to express his thoughts about the change made in the squad, opining that Jason’s absence will be felt in the West Indies’ lineup.
"Jason is an experienced player in our set-up. His absence will undoubtedly be felt both on and off the field. We look forward to having a fully fit Jason with us again soon. While it is unfortunate to lose a player of Jason's caliber, we are confident in the abilities of Obed McCoy. Obed has shown remarkable skill and promise in his performances, and this opportunity will allow him to further showcase his talent on the international stage. We believe he will bring a fresh and dynamic energy to the squad,” Desmond Haynes said in a press release by Cricket West Indies.
We are fortunate to have such depth and quality in our ranks: Darren Sammy
The side’s head coach, Darren Sammy, came forward to express how lucky the West Indies are to have such depth in their ranks and how every reserve player is fully capable of slotting into the main squad.
"We are fortunate to have such depth and quality in our ranks. Our reserve players are all A-class talents who have proven their abilities in various formats of the game, but certainly T20. Each one of them is fully capable of slotting into the team seamlessly should the situation arise,” Darren Sammy said.
The final West Indies squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup will be:
Rovman Powell (Captain), Alzarri Joseph (Vice Captain), Johnson Charles, Roston Chase, Shimron Hetmyer, Shai Hope, Akeal Hosein, Shamar Joseph, Brandon King, Obed McCoy, Gudakesh Motie, Nicholas Pooran, Andre Russell, Sherfane Rutherford, Romario Shepherd
Reserves: Kyle Mayers, Matthew Forde, Fabian Allen, Hayden Walsh, Andre Fletcher
