“If he was included in the squad for experience, then we were not able to see it. At least spend some time at this wicket," Sehwag said.

Former India batter Virender Sehwag has come forward and scrutinised veteran Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan. The scrutiny came after Shakib Al Hasan’s horrid showing against South Africa in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024.

Shakib only managed to score three runs during the run chase against South Africa, as the side lost the game by just four runs in New York on Monday, June 10. It is worth noting that Shakib Al Hasan has had a troublesome couple of months.

Shakib left the latter stages of the ODI World Cup 2023 due to injury, relinquished his captaincy and had even more trouble before he made his comeback in the home series against Zimbabwe.

Speaking of his showing, Sehwag opined that, as an experienced player, Shakib should be playing more responsibly and that he should have had a bigger role to play for Bangladesh.

“If he was included in the squad for experience, then we were not able to see it. Atleast spend some time at this wicket, it is not like you are not Hayden or Gilchrist who can play a pull shot of a short ball, you are just a player from Bangladesh. Play according to your standards. When you are not able to play hook or pull, so just play the strokes that you know," Sehwag told Cricbuzz.

There are expectations on Shakib: Parthiv Patel

Furthermore, former India cricketer Parthiv Patel took centre stage and opined that, as Shakib Al Hasan has been playing since the first T20 World Cup 2024, there are certain expectations from him and that the youngsters in the side look up to him.

"There are expectations on Shakib, and that is not wrong, because he has been playing since the first World Cup. Especially when the team is in trouble, the young players in the team will obviously look up to him. Shakib said after losing the series to USA that it was a wake-up call. If you need wake-up calls even after playing for 15 years, then imagine how much he has snoozed,” Parthiv Patel said.
