The inaugural edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) was in 2008 and ever since it has become a revolution in franchise-based format globally. As the tournament prepares for its 17th edition in 2024, a few cricketers remain who were present at its inception and continue to play even after 17 years.

In the league's first season, a group of talented players registered their names in the auction. Among them, was the ever-iconic MS Dhoni for the Chennai Super Kings, Virat Kohli joined Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Other faces include Rohit Sharma, who started with Deccan Chargers in 2009 before becoming a stalwart for Mumbai Indians. All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja started with Rajasthan Royals initially and is now part of CSK. While Ravichandran Ashwin graced Chennai Super Kings and will return to Rajasthan in 2024.

The trio of Shikhar Dhawan, Piyush Chawla, and Amit Mishra have played for various franchises over the years. Manish Pandey became the first Indian to score a century in 2009, and the versatile Ajinkya Rahane has represented multiple teams, including his current side, Chennai Super Kings.

Dinesh Karthik, the veteran wicketkeeper-batsman, made his IPL debut in 2008 with Delhi Daredevils and will don the Royal Challengers Bangalore colors in 2024. Ishant Sharma and Wriddhiman Saha started with Kolkata Knight Riders and have since played for various franchises. Rishi Dhawan and Swapnil Singh are also among those to have played for various teams.

Among the 15 players, Virat Kohli is the only player to have played for a single franchise since the start. Others have shifted their bases a couple of times during the years. The first edition saw eight teams participating but over time, two more teams have been added.

IPL is one of the biggest franchise cricket tournaments in the world and other countries have also now made their franchise tournaments the same as IPL. The 2024 season kickstarts on March 22nd  in Chennai with a clash between five-time champions Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru who are still waiting for their maiden title.
