Former India cricketer Harbhajan Singh has expressed his thoughts on relying on India spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja to ensure Team India wins the first Test at Nagpur convincingly in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023.
India are the current champions of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after they won the four-match series 2-1 back in 2020-21. Even back then, India made a comeback after initially losing the first Test at the Adelaide Oval. Australia’s records in India haven’t been great in Test cricket since they last won a series way back in 2004.
I think the spinners will win the match for India tomorrow: Harbhajan Singh
"I think Ashwin will pick the most wickets and Jadeja will also have some. These two spinners will get the job done. They have many left-handers, so Ashwin will probably start with the new ball. I think the spinners will win the match for India tomorrow,” the 42-year-old said in a video shared on his YouTube channel.
The former spinner was extremely impressed by the Aswhin-Jadeja duo on Day 1 of the opening Test, and he stated that with such a confident start to the series especially by this duo, it would definitely be upon them to take India home in the opening Test. The spin-twins shared 8 wickets between themselves in the first innings, with Jadeja bagging a brilliant fifer.
Further adding on, Harbhajan reserved a special bit of praise for all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja. The 34-year-old was stupendous in displaying his all-round skills to perfection in the opening Test. Harbhajan stated that through this performance, Jadeja had actually laid out a template on how to play Test cricket.
"He picked five wickets with the ball. But the innings he played was such a fabulous innings. It wasn't typical where Jadeja just came in and went on hitting. He showed defense and his step over was also good. He showed the game that is played in Test cricket,” he concluded.
