Reports: CSK set to release Ben Stokes for IPL 2024
The decision comes after a lacklustre season for Stokes, who played in only two games after being acquired for a hefty Rs 16.25 crore in the last mini-auction.
After recent developments, according to a report from Cricbuzz, it has been revealed that there could be a possibility of a change in team dynamics as Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are considering releasing star all-rounder Ben Stokes due to concerns about his availability for IPL 2024. This decision comes after a lacklustre season for Stokes, who played in only two games after being acquired for a hefty Rs 16.25 crore in the last mini-auction.
The main reason behind this potential move is Stokes' upcoming knee surgery, which requires nearly two months of recovery time. CSK, known for their strategic approach, seems hesitant to take a risk on his fitness for the league scheduled from March to May 2024.
While discussions with Stokes have taken place, the CSK management has not directly contacted the English all-rounder, leaving the situation somewhat unclear. A CSK official said, "We would not consider releasing Stokes if he could be available because he is a big match player, and we hold him in the highest regard. But if he can't make it to the season, we will have blocked Rs 16 crore with which we could acquire some quality players," as quoted by Cricbuzz.
There are also rumours surrounding the potential release of Lockie Ferguson by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) due to his history of injuries, and the KKR management is reportedly considering their options.
Amidst the trade talks, there were speculations about a swap between Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore involving Shardul Thakur and Harshal Patel. However, recent updates confirm that no such trade is in the works.
Sources indicate that there are intense discussions among franchises regarding high-profile trades, and fans can expect clarity by November 19, the deadline for completing trades. Franchises are required to announce their lists of retentions and releases by November 26, paving the way for the auction scheduled on December 19 at the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai.
The cricketing world eagerly awaits the unfolding news as teams strategise for the upcoming season. The IPL 2024 is going to begin on March 23, 2024, and it will go on until May 29, 2024. The BCC will release the full schedule of IPL 2024 very soon.
