Reports: Franchise owners adopting surge pricing, dynamic-rates strategies to maximise gate revenue for IPL 2024
The BCCI gives the IPL franchise owners the right to decide the ticket prices for their home games.
The maximum price of a ticket in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 is INR 42,350 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium for Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) home matches but the surge pricing rate takes it up to INR 52,938.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) allows IPL franchises to independently decide the pricing for their home matches. Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are selling the cheapest ticket in the ongoing IPL 2024 as the minimum amount that fans have to pay to get a ticket is INR 499. However, prices are subject to change depending on the star power of the opposition teams. For big-ticket encounters, franchise owners want to maximise their gate sales and that is why they have adopted surge pricing and dynamic-rates strategies.

While the costs of some tickets are very high, fans have not stopped themselves from going all out and flocking to the stadiums. For instance, RCB, who have had a disappointing season, have still had great turnouts for their home matches. The RCB supporters are regarded as one of the most loyal fanbases in world cricket and their relentless support for their struggling team this season is another proof of that.
The cheapest ticket at the Chinnaswamy costs Rs 2,300 – the highest of the tournament in that category. While these are exempted from surge pricing, the rates for more expensive seats see a spike as the match day approaches. Meanwhile, the most expensive ticket at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk for a Chennai Super Kings home game is INR 6,000, which is the lowest for any franchise.

Since the Indian board gives the franchise a free hand to decide ticket prices and the fans are filling stands, no one is complaining. “They (franchises) do the pricing by themselves. We provide them with the infrastructure and our job is to fulfill their requirements. We don’t engage in the pricing of tickets,” Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) secretary Rajan Manchanda told The Indian Express.
