India's star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja showed a lack of consistency in the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. The southpaw could only manage 135 runs at an average of 27 and took four wickets in the three matches he played in the five-match series.

Ravindra Jadeja has been a proven high performer among the all-rounders in the world, excelling in all the departments whether it is scoring runs, taking wickets, and making crucial contributions in the field. However, due to the latest performances, his spot in the team is being questioned.

Jadeja retired from T20Is after the 2024 T20 World Cup and last played an ODI in the 2023 World Cup as he was not included for the three-match ODI series in Sri Lanka last year. A BCCI source said the management and head coach Gautam Gambhir are looking to develop a strong core for the 2027 ODI World Cup and talked about an urge to move on from the southpaw.

“Gambhir has been very assertive about creating core teams according to formats. As of now, he hasn't quite tinkered with the longer formats but has a clear vision for creating a strong base for the ODI World Cup. He is keen on giving exposure to a few more identified players," a BCCI source told TOI.

“It's all about when the selectors decide the transition needs to kick in. They will discuss if they want to go with a safe option in Jadeja or move on right now, Even in Test cricket, he has struggled to get going, though his bowling has been steady. There is an urge to move on from him, especially in the ODI format. It will be a tough call in the coming days," the source added.

Jadeja played eight white-ball matches only in the 2024 season, all during the T20 World Cup. He could only manage to take a solitary wicket in the tournament and scored 35 runs at an average of 11.66. The players, who have been a consistent pick in the white-ball format ahead of Jadeja, are Axar Patel and Washington Sundar who have played 19 and 15 matches respectively in limited-overs cricket last year.
