Star India wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has undergone successful knee surgery, according to sources at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital and Medical Research Institute in Mumbai. The injured cricketer who escaped a fatal car accident was airlifted from Dehradun to Mumbai on Wednesday to operate on one of the two ligament tears that he sustained in the tragic car crash.

"Rishabh Pant has successfully undergone a knee ligament surgery on Friday. He will be under observation. Further course of action and rehabilitation will be advised by Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala and followed by the BCCI sports science and medicine team," PTI reported a BCCI source as saying.

Pant was moved to Mumbai after the BCCI released a statement saying that the board will be looking after the welfare of the injured cricketer and will be keeping close tabs on his ligament injury. The statement revealed that the southpaw would be in the care of Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala, Head of the Centre for Sports Medicine, and Director of Arthroscopy & Shoulder Service at the aforementioned hospital.

"The Board will make every effort to aid and expedite the recovery process of Rishabh and will provide him with all the support he needs during this period," the BCCI said in an official statement.

Pant facing lengthy spell on the sidelines following tragic car accident

Rishabh Pant was involved in a horrific car crash on the morning of December 30 when his speeding car collided with a divider on the Delhi-Derhadun Highway. Although the star cricketer managed to escape without any life-threatening injuries, he suffered several lacerative wounds along with a ligament tear in his right knee.

While the 25-year-old is convalescing from his multiple injuries at the Mumbai hospital, it is understood that he could be out of action for at least six months, making him a doubt for this year's edition of the IPL. However, several anonymous sources have also stated that the ligament injury on Pant's right knee might be worse than previously thought and could see the cricketer miss out on the Asia Cup and ODI World Cup later this year. The BCCI is yet to confirm an expected date of return for the injured gloveman.
