Rohit Sharma discusses pacers' workload management ahead of marathon Test season
India to play two Test matches against Bangladesh, three against New Zealand and five against Australia in the next five months.
India will play ten Test matches and one warm-up red-ball game in the next five months. Keeping that in mind, India captain Rohit Sharma addressed that the workload management of the bowlers will be critical. He understands that the pacers will not play all the matches and noted that the team management has already laid out a plan that will be executed in the two-match Test series against Bangladesh, three against New Zealand and lastly, five against Australia.
The India captain also noted that resting the bowlers won’t be an issue for the team. He reminded that Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj were rested for a Test each in the series against England, and added that it can be repeated. The 37-year-old added that multiple quality players are waiting in the wings, which the team management observed during the Duleep Trophy, which is why, he isn’t worried about giving breaks to main pacers during the 10 Tests marathon.

“We will always keep that (workload management of the pacers) on the back of our mind. You want your best players to play all the games, but that’s not possible because there’s so much cricket that happens. We have laid out some plans — how we are going to manage these bowlers, but it all depends on the workload that is being carried by them in these games. We will monitor that,” Rohit said at the press conference.
Saw some exciting prospects in Duleep Trophy: Rohit
“We have done that pretty well against England (previous Test series). We managed to rest Bumrah, We managed to give Siraj one Test match off. It all depends on how their body feels in that particular time. We have got a lot of bowlers who are there. We saw Duleep Trophy, there were some exciting prospects. I am not too worried about the kind of bowlers that are waiting in the wings for us,” he added.
India’s Test season will begin against Bangladesh on September 19 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. After the two-match red-ball series, they will play three T20Is against the Najmul Shanto-led side, before hosting New Zealand for three Tests.
