Since 2008, when the Indian Premier League (IPL) started, the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) franchise has had some world-class players. However, the title has eluded them for 16 seasons. When RCB owners decided to have their team in the inaugural season of the Women's Premier League (WPL) last year, fans were waiting to see how they would assemble their squad.

The first-ever WPL auction went quite well for Bangalore. They roped in Indian vice-captain Smriti Mandhana for Rs 3.40 crore. The southpaw turned out to be the most expensive player in the WPL auction in 2023. However, she wasn't the only star player in the RCB line-up. They also picked up experienced international all-rounders like Ellyse Perry and Sophie Devine and impactful new-ball bowlers like Megan Schutt and Renuka Singh. The destructive wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh was also picked up by the Bangalore-based franchise.

With such a star-studded team, the Royal Challengers were touted by many as the favourites to go the distance in WPL 2023. However, Smriti and Co. lost their first five matches, which all but ended their hopes of reaching the playoffs. In their last three matches, Bangalore won two and lost one to finish fourth on the points table, only above the Gujarat Giants.

Australia's Luke Williams has been announced as the new head coach for RCB in the upcoming WPL season. Meanwhile, Mo Bobat has come on board as the director of cricket. Williams replaced Ben Sawyer, who served in the role during WPL 2023. The former has the experience of playing first-class cricket for South Australia and has led the Adelaide Strikers to two runner-up finishes and a maiden WBBL title in the 2022-23 season.

Williams worked as the assistant coach of the Southern Brave team in the Women's Hundred during their successful 2023 campaign. He also achieved commendable results with the South Australia Scorpions in the National Cricket League. Williams will look to end RCB's title drought and give joy to their loyal fanbase.

The management has bolstered the squad by acquiring the services of experienced international players like Australian spinner Georgia Wareham and England pacer Kate Cross from the WPL 2024 auction along with other talented Indian players. The Royal Challengers would want to forget the nightmare of the previous season and have a strong campaign in 2024.
