SA20 2023: Temba Bavuma joins Sunrisers Eastern Cape as replacement for Tom Abell
Bavuma failed to attract any bids during the auction of the inaugural season.
Following an impressive outing in the recently concluded ODI series against England, Sunrisers Eastern Cape of the SA20 league have signed Temba Bavuma as a replacement for Tom Abell. Bavuma concluded the series as the leading run-scorer for the Proteas with 180 runs from three outings, which was his most successful run as an ODI batter.
It is worth mentioning that Bavuma failed to attract any bids during the auction of the inaugural season. The South Africa stalwart endured a rough patch prior to the T20 World Cup 2022 as he was unable to get big scores for his side. Due to his underwhelming run, the batter was snubbed in the auction, which surprised many fans and members of the cricketing fraternity.
The Sunrisers franchise took to the micro-blogging site Twitter to post an official confirmation of Temba Bavuma's signing. The flamboyant batter is set to join the Gqeberha-based side for the remainder of the season after the exit of Englishman Tom Abell.
Sunrisers Eastern Cape aim to cement spot in final four
As the business end of the ongoing SA20 is on the horizon, all the teams are vying for spots in the final four of the competition. Sunrisers Eastern Cape currently have 17 points under their belt with eight matches played thus far and stand second on the points table.
However, the side faces stiff competition from the likes of Paarl Royals, Joburg Super Kings, and MI Cape Town who are just a few points below in the standings. The Gqeberha-based franchise plays its final two games against Durban’s Super Giants on February 3 and Joburg Super Kings on February 5.
The inclusion of the South Africa skipper will certainly hand a massive boost to the Sunrisers in their final two games of the league phase. However, it remains to be seen if the side is able to cement its place in the last four and fight hard for the coveted title.
