Star India pacer Mohammed Shami was back in the Indian team after a hiatus of over 14 months. He played in the third T20I against England and went wicket-less. After being rested in the fourth T20I, he was back in the fifth T20I in Mumbai and claimed three wickets bowling 2.3 overs and conceded 25 runs. But the bowler still lacks the usual glitter and only more games would help him get rid of the rust.

The first ODI against England presents a good opportunity for the right-arm pacer to commence the Champions Trophy 2025 preparation. The veteran is just five wickets away from becoming the fastest bowler in the world to take 200 wickets in ODIs. He has a golden opportunity to achieve this feat with a fifer at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium (VCA), in Nagpur, on February 6.

If done so, Mohammed Shami will overtake Australia’s Mitchell Starc, who achieved this feat in the 102nd match in as many innings. The star India pacer has 195 wickets to his name in 101 ODIs played so far. It is worth noting that, the Uttar Pradesh-born pacer will be playing his first 50-over game after World Cup 2023 final against Australia in Ahmedabad on 19 November 2023. The 34-year-old recovered from an Achilles Heel injury, sustained during World Cup 2023 and was undergoing rehab at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) for most of 2024.
