Shane Bond picks Scott Edwards over Babar Azam as ODI World Cup captain

Former New Zealand pacer Shane Bond has picked Netherlands skipper Scott Edwards ahead of Pakistan's Babar Azam as the 'ODI World Cup captain.' The Pakistan captain's position is in jeopardy as the team has suffered three consecutive defeats in the tournament.

Pakistan made the best of the starts, winning the first two games against the Netherlands and Sri Lanka, respectively. However, the Rohit Sharma-led team India ended Pakistan's winning run, and they went on to suffer defeats against India, Australia and Afghanistan.

Pakistan are set to take on South Africa in a must-win game at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on October 27 as a loss will virtually end their hopes of reaching the semifinals. Bond picked Edwards over Babar in a 'You can only pick one' session with ESPNcricinfo.

PCB hints Babar Azam may be sacked

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) recently clarified the stance Babar Azam's captaincy, given the team's recent dismal performances. The board stated that Babar and Chief Selector Inzamam-ul-Haq have been allowed to form the squad for the ongoing tournament. The Board also urged everyone to support the team to make a successful comeback in the showpiece event.

"Addressing the media scrutiny directed at captain Babar Azam and the team management, the board's stance, echoing that of former cricketers, is that successes and defeats are part of the game. Captain Babar Azam and Chief Selector Inzamam-ul-Haq were given freedom and support in forming the squad for the ICC World Cup 2023.

"Looking ahead, the board will make decisions in the best interest of Pakistan cricket based on the team's performances in the World Cup. At present, the PCB encourages fans, former players and stakeholders to rally behind the team as they strive to make a triumphant comeback in the mega-event," said PCB in a statement.
