Shreyas Iyer ruled out of IPL 2023 and World Test Championship Final
The 28-year-old will undergo back surgery and therefore will be out of action.
Star India batter Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of the ongoing 16th edition of the Indian Premier League due to his back injury, which had kept him out of action so far. The 28-year-old has opted to undergo surgery to recover from the back injury that he sustained during Australia's tour of India before the IPL 2023.
As Iyer's participation at the IPL had been doubtful, the franchise appointed Nitish Rana as the team's skipper in his absence. Consequently, Iyer has also been ruled out of the World Test Championship final, which is set to be played between India and Australia from June 7 at The Oval in England.
As per a report by ESPNcricinfo, Iyer will be travelling overseas for the surgery, which will keep him out of action for minimum three months. He will be able to get back to training only after completing the surgery successfully. Earlier, there had been reports of Iyer having opted out of the surgery but as per recent developments, the batter will go through the process so as to recover timely.
Shreyas Iyer complained of back pain during India's tour of Bangladesh, which had kept him out of the international setup for over a month. He returned to action during the Border Gavaskar Trophy in February, but faced similar issues during the fourth and final Test of the series in Ahmedabad, which forced him to sit out of the game.
It is believed that he had swelling in his lower back during the Bangladesh as well as Australia series as a result of problems caused by a bulging in one of his spine's discs that had caused a pinched nerve. Iyer's right calf has been affected by a nerve that runs along the leg, which has made his challenges even worse.
The Indian Test team will start preparing for the all-important World Test Championship final soon after the conclusion of the Indian Premier League 2023.
