Steven Smith carried on his run-scoring spree during the ongoing Test series against Sri Lanka by registering his second ton on the current tour on Day 2 of the second Test at the Galle International Stadium. Notably, this marked his 36th Test ton of his career.
With his recent milestone, Smith joined the likes of former Indian cricketer, Rahul Dravid, and seasoned English batter, Joe Root, in terms of the number of centuries recorded in the longest format of the game. He also became the fifth-highest century-maker in the format. Coming in to bat with Australia in a muddle at 37/2, Smith steered his side well clear of danger via his fluent approach at the crease.
The special moment arrived on the final delivery of the 63rd over of Australia's innings when a short delivery by Kamindu Mendis was pulled through mid-wicket for a smashing boundary. Interestingly, Smith took only 206 innings to attain his 36th century in Tests, while Dravid and Root brought up their respective 36th hundreds in their 276th and 275th Test innings, respectively.
Australia rule the roost on Day 2
Australia recovered well from the early setback which was in the form of two early wickets. Smith partnered with Usman Khawaja to navigate his side to calmer waters. Khawaja was dismissed in the 25th over. Out came Alex Carey to replace Khawaja. The duo of Smith and Khawaja forged a massive century stand to further frustrate the hosts.
Despite riding his luck on a couple of occasions after getting past his 50, Smith looked at ease and got to his century after a brief while. For the unversed, the ton he scored today was his second on the trot. His 141 in the first Test was followed up with an unbeaten 120-run knock. Carey ended the day on a tally of 139. The visitors will be keen on extending their lead.
