Making any sort of debut in a particular field is always a special feeling, and one to cherish for one's entire lifetime. April 30, 2024, was one such moment for Sanju Samson, who had to wait nine long years for his first ICC event call-up, ever since he made his T20I debut in 2015. A major reason for this could be attributed to his blazing form with the bat in the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League 2024, as well as the maturity he's displayed while leading the Rajasthan Royals.

The Kerala-born has toiled strenuously hard ever since he burst onto the scene, but unfortunately, could never attain eligibility to be India's first-choice wicketkeeper, primarily due to MS Dhoni and then Rishabh Pant eclipsing him for the role.

Reportedly, Pant will be the first-choice keeper for the upcoming tournament, and Sanju is expected to feature as a pure batter. However, questions regarding his batting positions have been surfacing ever since the announcement of the squad. Yashasvi Jaiswal's inclusion made it clear that Virat Kohli will be batting at 3, followed by Suryakumar Yadav at 4, thus leaving a spot of confusion on the stumper-batter's position.

On being asked about his batting position on Star Sports, Samson replied, “That's a very tricky question.”

He also asserted that his RR teammates, and pundits, alike have been having the same discussion since quite some time now. However, he felt that for now, the only target for his side's players should be to win the IPL trophy.

“We definitely were thinking about it; everyone is thinking about the batting positions… Sanju kaha batting karega and all (which position will Sanju bat). But equally, I feel it is also important for the team that they try to win the IPL. As of now, winning the IPL is more important. The players should focus on that goal only,” the cricketer added.

Sanju has the ability to come down the order if need be: Ajit Agarkar

All India Men's Selection Committee's chief and former cricketer Ajit Agarkar appeared at a presser regarding the squad announcement. At the event, Agarkar docketed Samson to be a flexible player, who could also play in the middle order as well, or even someone who could finish the game if the need be.
