After South Africa suffered a six-wicket defeat at the hands of Australia in the first Test match at the Gabba, ace pacer Kagiso Rabada opened up to highlight South Africa’s problem in the longest format of the game.

The 27-year-old believes that the Proteas batters are currently inexperienced and thus, are unable to deliver what’s required. Against the Aussies, the Deal Elgar-led side completely misfired with the bat as they were bundled out for 152 and 99 runs in the first and second innings respectively.

The bowlers kept them in the hunt but eventually, the Aussies reigned supreme as they needed only 34 runs in the final innings to win the contest.

Rabada mentioned that they (South African batters) are relatively inexperienced in comparison to the same of the other Test-playing nations and that eventually is playing as a decisive factor from time to time. The speedster even revealed that it can be frustrating at times but he understands as the team is currently going through a rebuilding phase.

“The batting line-up that we have is quite inexperienced. In fact, the team that we have is relatively inexperienced if you look at other cricketing nations. Dean Elgar is our most experienced player followed by myself and Temba [Bavuma].

“I've played 50-odd Test matches and everyone else hasn't played much. It can get frustrating as well and when I say frustrating I don't mean to single out the batters, it's frustrating as a team and you almost have to understand that sometimes this is what happens in a rebuilding phase,” Rabada said.

There needs to be an element of patience and understanding: Rabada

The 27-year-old has enough experience to understand that the team currently needs to be patient in order to get the result. He also reminded that the team can’t advocate for poor performances but there’s a belief that they can produce match-winning performances in the near future.

“So, there needs to be an element of patience and understanding but at the same time, you can't advocate for bad performances. However, we're quite positive.

If you don't have the belief, then I don't think we'd be able to go out and produce performances like we have. It's all down to belief and I think we have the belief. We will never go down without a fight,” the cricketer added.
