New Zealand cricket has given birth to some underrated stars who have contributed a lot to the game. One of the bowlers who comes under this list is 38-year-old left-arm pacer Neil Wagner. The Pretoria-born New Zealand cricketer has been part of some of the most iconic matches in New Zealand cricket.

Wagner might have retired from the game of cricket and might have not had the longest career in international cricket. One of his biggest contributions was in the inaugural World Test Championship cycle of 2019-21 where he took 35 wickets in the eight matches he played and was among the highest wicket takers for his team. The Blackcaps also went on to win the new ICC event as well.

Wagner also opened up on some of his memories which he shared during a recent interview where he talked about this current season as well as bringing up the 3-0 series win against India who he considered to be a pinnacle moment for the New Zealand side despite defeats against Sri Lanka and England in the 2024 season.

“The series win in India was amazing and unreal. It will be the pinnacle for a lot of those players’ careers I reckon, but as mentioned before, it will take them time to grow in their roles and gain experience and confidence moving forward, and hopefully more Tests soon as possible they will find that! They weren’t far off against England and results could have easily gone their way with some better luck at times and it’s part of Test cricket,” Wagner said in an interview with The Indian Express.

“They’ll be better for the experience and learnings moving forward but still played some really good cricket! The more Tests they can play the more experienced they’ll be and they will do big things like when they beat India in India! And look forward to seeing this team moving forward and hopefully build on it and have more success than what we had in our time there,” Wagner added.

Speaking of Wagner’s Test record before his retirement he has played a total of 64 Test matches for New Zealand where he has taken 260 wickets at an average of 27.57 with nine five-wicket hauls to his name. This also makes him the fifth-highest wicket-taker for his country in Test matches.
