'They told me it would be funny' - Mikyle Louis describes 'fist bump' incident with King Charles

The West Indies team met King Charles when they toured England in July for the three-match Test series. Before the series began, the Caribbean guests were invited to Buckingham Palace for a meet and greet with the King. During the interaction, Mikyle Louis unleashed a fist bump towards the King and he responded jovially. Louis has revealed that the action was intentional and was backed by the approval of royal staff.

The 23-year-old added that before the meeting, the players were pondering over the way of interaction through a bow or a simple handshake. But Louis went one step further and asked the royal staff to permit him with a fist bump as they approved saying it would be "funny". Moreover, Louis’ brother, Jeremiah, taught the King spud bump, an elaborate handshake.

"In my head, I always was planning to give him a fist bump. But the thing is, I don't know if in the UK that's a common greeting, like in the Caribbean. So I wasn't sure if he would be able to respond. So I did ask a question [to the royal staff] if this is something that would be possible. They told me it would be funny, so I just went through with it,” said Louis as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

Louis went on to debut for West Indies in the same series and was impressive in his first outing also playing an away tour. He was presented the cap by the West Indies legend, Vivian Richards, his idol while he grew up. He scored his first half-century during the last Test in Edgbaston as England outclassed the visitors by 3-0.

"[Before the England tour] I practised with the intent of looking to get forward, but now I am trying to get that big stride in or play it late. I don't think I have mastered it yet, it's something I am working on,” he added.
