Virat Kohli ruled all formats for years but Shubman Gill also has similar potential: Irfan Pathan

Shubman Gill is on top of the world once again, after he notched up his first century in the T20I format. Cricketer turned commentator Irfan Pathan applauded his performance, and believes he has similar potential like Virat Kohli

There were doubts on Gill’s place in the T20I team because in his last five appearances before yesterday, he didn’t have a significant score and wasn’t converting his starts into big scores. Yesterday, in the deciding T20I against New Zealand, he smashed his first T20I hundred and stayed right till the end to ensure India reached a big total. India won the game comfortably with a huge margin of 168 runs as they bowled the opposition out for a mere 66 runs.

Irfan Pathan, the former India bowler while having a discussion on Star Sports was full of praise for the Gujarat Titans batter. He said, “The way he is batting, I am a huge fan of his. I am repeatedly saying that he can become an all-format player for you. Virat Kohli ruled all formats for many years, this batter has as much potential. To convert that into performance is a different thing."

Pathan then spoke about the current form of Shubman Gill and how he is converting his starts into big innings. He said, “That happens with time but Shubman Gill has started to do that. He scored his first century in August. Gill has now scored a total of six centuries in international cricket and we have just started February, where all other players have scored just four international centuries."

Gill has a big year ahead of him with the Border Gavaskar Trophy starting next week. With impressive performances in the limited overs format, the opener will now look to make an impact while donning the whites for the Indian team.
