Watch: Arshdeep Singh channels Shannon Gabriel as scores level with 14 balls remaining in 1st ODI against SL
The first ODI between Sri Lanka and India was tied.
The first ODI of the ongoing three-game series between Sri Lanka and India ended in a tie. The game saw Sri Lanka come in to bat first after winning the toss. After a resilient performance with the bat, Sri Lanka managed to post a total of 230 runs in the first innings.
As the visitors came out to chase the target, Team India got off to a good start as skipper Rohit Sharma scored 58 runs in 47 deliveries. Virat Kohli added 24 runs on the board, with KL Rahul and Axar Patel adding 31 and 33 runs, respectively. India needed one run in the last 14 balls when the final batter, Arshdeep Singh, came out to bat.
Sri Lanka skipper Charith Asalanka dismissed Shivam Dube on the previous delivery, which saw Arshdeep Singh and Mohammed Siraj take on the responsibility to propel their side over the finish line.
However, instead of going for a single, Arshdeep decided to heave the ball for a six, and his attempt was dismissed through LBW, as India lost their final wicket, the match was tied.
Some even equated Arshdeep Singh’s moment to that of Shannon Gabriel, playing for the Windies in the 2017 Dominica Test against Pakistan, Gabriel was bowled after he attempted a similar shot when he was just moments away from a draw.

Proud of how we fought, was important to hold our nerve: Rohit Sharma
Furthermore, India skipper Rohit Sharma came forward to talk about the game and how disappointed he was that the side failed to get the last run. However, he did reveal that he was proud of the performance that they put in.
"The scores are gettable, you have to bat well to get that. We batted well in patches, there was no consistent momentum. We started well but knew the game would start once spin comes on. We lost a few wickets and fell behind. Came back through the stand between Axar and Rahul. Disappointed to not get 1 run with 14 balls, but won't read too much. Proud of how we fought, was important to hold our nerve,” Rohit said in the post-match presentation ceremony.
