20 years ago, Afghanistan played their first-ever official game in a tournament organised by the Asian Cricket Council. They had the potential for a long time but could never break the shackles and explore cricket professionally. The globalization of the sport, thanks to franchise cricket helped them identify their potential and compete against the top-ranked countries in the world.

In 20 years, Afghanistan have achieved what other countries can only dream about. They went on to cause some upsets in world cricket to play Test cricket and now, they have qualified for the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2024. They have finished second behind India in the Super Eights and will be playing against South Africa at the Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad with the hope of qualifying for their maiden final in ICC tournaments.

Ahead of that, skipper Rashid Khan has called for more support as they stand on the brink of history. He acknowledged that the supporters played a big role in their growth as a cricketing nation and promised to play a good brand of cricket to make the coming moment unforgettable.

“We have come a long way and faced many challenges. But your support has always been our strength. Now, as we stand on the brink of history, we need your voices louder than ever. Let's make this moment unforgettable,” Rashid was quoted as saying by NDTV.

Afghanistan needed a win in their final Super Eights game to make it to the semis. In a close-fought match against Bangladesh, Afghanistan had its ups and downs but managed to pick up an eight-run victory. Following the win, a few of the Afghanistan players were seen in tears while the fans back home came out in numbers and celebrated together on the streets. ACB later shared the images of the same and it went viral in no time.
