'We would sit and ponder if Prithvi should play or not' - Mohammad Kaif reflects on Shaw getting unsold in IPL 2025 auction
"He had a lot of potential and DC backed him to the hilt," said Kaif.
The Indian Premier League 2025 mega auctions concluded on November 25. Star batter Prithvi Shaw was released by Delhi Capitals, and it was expected that another franchise might opt for his services, but the player remained unsold in the auction. Shaw had registered himself at a base price of Rs 75 lakh, but no team was interested in buying the right-handed batter. Mohammed Kaif, who was DC’s Head Coach, has said the Shaw should be “embarrassed” after not getting picked.
The 25-year-old was a rising talent after his Under-19 shenanigans. He had a nominal stay with the Indian team and was benched owing to poor form. His fitness too came under the scanner, but the cricketer made timely appearances in IPL. Kaif, who was with DC, stated that Shaw is one player who cannot complain about not getting chances in the playing.

"Delhi has backed Prithvi Shaw a lot. DC had hoped that he is a powerplay player and would hit 6 boundaries in one over. And he did that too. He hit Shivam Mavi for 6 fours in an over. He had a lot of potential and DC backed him to the hilt. We always thought that if Shaw manages to score, we will win. And we gave him a lot of chances," Mohammed Kaif said on JioCinema.
"There were meetings in the night where we would sit and ponder if Prithvi should play or not because he has been failing. So at night we would decide that Prithvi would not be in the playing XI, and then later on the day of the match, we would change our decision - that, no he will because maybe if he goes big, we would win," Kaif narrated a team selection story.
