Left-arm speedster Jason Behrendorff has announced his retirement from state cricket after 16 years at Western Australia. He will continue to play T20 cricket in the franchise leagues where he has enjoyed considerable success.

The 34-year-old does remain available for selection to the Australian team, having played 17 T20Is with the last being against West Indies in Perth 12 months ago. He also played 12 ODIs from 2019-22. Behrendorff has 16 and 18 wickets in ODIs and T20Is, respectively.

His retirement comes on the back of leaving Perth Scorchers at the end of last season - having just finished as the BBL's leading wicket-taker - and signing a three-year deal with Melbourne Renegades. In his 13 years of playing in the BBL, Behrendorff bagged four titles with the Scorchers. He played 106 games in the popular league.

"It is the end of one chapter which has been a really exciting one. It's been so much fun. I've been able to live my childhood dream playing state cricket to then have played cricket for Australia as well. The WACA Ground has been my home for so long now,"  Behrendorff said after announcing his retirement on Wednesday, February 26.

Behrendorff played in the recently-concluded third season of the SA20, where he took two wickets in three matches for Pretoria Capitals.

"It played a huge part in my decision to retire. I know that I'm away with international commitments, franchise leagues and the like, but I want to be home and present for my kids. In particular, things like school pick-up and drop-off," Behrendorff said.

"To be able to do those things I don't always get to do, to spend more quality time with my wife, Juvelle … to be able to immerse myself more in family life," he added.

Behrendorff played 31 first-class matches in which he bagged 126 wickets at an average of 23.85. In the List A circuit, he picked up 97 wickets from 70 matches.
