The much-anticipated India vs Pakistan game in Asia Cup 2023 is underway on Saturday, September 2 at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Pallekele. Indian skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bat first despite the forecast of rain throughout the course of the game. India got off to a miserable start as Pakistan seamers were all over the Indian batting. Despite four early blows, India managed to post a fighting score of 266 in 48.5 overs.

However, rain once again played spoilsport in the game as it once again came down, delaying the start of Pakistan’s chase. In such a scenario, the DLS method will be used to determine Pakistan’s target in the rain-curtailed game. The Babar Azam-led side will be given a target of 155 if the game is reduced to 20 overs while the target will be 203 in case of a 30-over game. A 40-over game would make Pakistan’s target to be 239.

Earlier in the game, Pakistan seamers led by Shaheen Afridi were all over the famed Indian batting line-up as they reduced them to 66/4 after 14.1 overs. Afridi picked up the prized scalps of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to bring India on the backfoot early on. Later on, Haris Rauf dismissed Shubman Gill (10 off 32) and Shreyas Iyer (14 off 9) to give another double whammy to the Men in Blue.

Ishan Kishan and Hardik Pandya saved India from an embarassing collapse

Hardik Pandya (87 off 90) and Ishan Kishan (82 off 81) rescued India’s sinking ship with their massive 138-run stand off 141 balls and helped them cross the 200-run mark. Notably, it was India’s highest fifth-wicket stand against Pakistan in ODIs. A cameo by Jasprit Bumrah (16 off 14) took India to 266 in 48.5 overs. Afridi was the pick of the bowlers for Pakistan with figures of 4/35 in ten overs while Haris Rauf (3/58, 9 overs) and Naseem Shah (3/36, 8.5 overs) also picked up three wickets each.
