'When I saw him batting, I thought this guy could be a destroyer' - Yograj Singh extols Arjun Tendulkar's batting prowess
Arjun Tendulkar recently brought up his maiden first-class century on his debut in Ranji Trophy against Rajasthan.
Former India cricketer Yograj Singh recently revealed an interesting story of how he identified the batting credentials of Sachin Tendulkar’s son Arjun. The 23-year-old made his debut in the Ranji Trophy for Goa and scored a century straightaway against Rajasthan which has become a talking point in the cricketing fraternity.
Notably, his father Sachin Tendulkar achieved the same feat in 1988 when he scored a century on first-class debut for Mumbai.
Yograj, who had trained his son Yuvraj Singh in the past, had set up a 'boot camp' for the youngster Arjun during the latter's stay in Chandigarh for the JP Atray tournament. Arjun had to wake up early at 5 AM and his gym sessions were about bodyweight training rather than the usual heavyweight lifting. The different method of training experience certainly helped the youngster to grow much more confident.
I feel he was mollycoddled by coaches because he is Tendulkar’s son: Yograj Singh
Yograj mentioned the call he received from his son Yuvraj Singh to train Tendulkar’s son and noted that he accepted to train the youngster based on a strict condition. He further noted that his words to Arjun were about forgetting the family he comes from and neglecting to live in his father’s shadow. He believes that Arjun has the ability to decimate bowling attacks.
"In the first week of September, I got a call from Yuvi (Yuvraj Singh), saying, ‘Dad, Arjun will be in Chandigarh for two weeks and Sachin has requested if you have time to train him’. How could I have said no to Sachin, he is like my elder son. But I had one condition. I told Yuvi, ‘You know my way of training and I don’t want anyone to intervene’,” Yograj told the Indian Express.
“I had told him that he must forget he is Sachin Tendulkar’s son for the next 15 days. I feel he was mollycoddled by coaches because he is Tendulkar’s son. I told him that he needs to get out of his father’s shadow. When I saw him batting, I thought this guy could be a destroyer. I immediately gave feedback to Sachin and Yuvraj. I called Sachin and asked him why he didn’t focus more on Arjun’s batting,” he added.
